Hi all,

This could be an off-topic, but it deals with most of the topics we have been discussing here. I took it from the library few days ago,and I have to give it back today, but... I am thinking about buying becase I find it very useful.

Maier, P. & Warren, A. Integrating Technology in Learning and Teaching. (2000) UK, Kogan Page

I hope you like it,

María

Sorry, but looking for that book in the Publisher web, I found
another one, which could also very useful for us...

Hi, María!

The book you refer below is very good. I have it and have quoted it a few times. It is very well organized, with great examples, lots of activities and many references, including many that are online.

Hi all,

I would like to endorse Maria's choice of Gilly Salmon's book on e-moderating. The model for CMC she presents in the book can be quite useful (both as a guide for planning and designing CMC, and a description of what may evolve in stages over time). The training of e-moderators is one other key topic. The book also has practical materials for practitioners in the Resources section. You may want to check the web site accompanying the book:

http://oubs.open.ac.uk/e-moderating

While you are about it you might as well have a look at these brief articles by two other leading practitioners:

http://www.emoderators.com/moderators/morten.html  (Morten Flate Paulsen,NKI College of Computer Science, Oslo, Norway)

http://www.emoderators.com/papers/mason.html  (Robin Mason, Institute of Educational Technology, OU UK)

***
I have now ordered a copy of the Maier&Warren book as well. Kogan Page books (in the field of online learning and distance education) have always been a good buy for me. Thanks for pointing it out, Maria.

Cheers, Arnold

Hi Arnold, and All,

Thanks for the links you shared with us. I have already bookmarked them to read as soon as I can.

Btw, in the references for this week, we have included a review of Gilly Salmon's book:

Meeting the assessment demands of networked courses

Janet Macdonald, The UK Open University in Scotland, Scotland; Martin Weller, The UK Open University, Milton Keynes; Robin Mason, The UK Open University, Milton Keynes

Networking offers new challenges and opportunities for assessment,
particularly in the scope for increased interactivity between
students and staff in a distance context. Assessment must reflect the
aims and objectives of the course, whilst providing opportunities for
the practice of relevant skills. At the same time, the pedagogy of
networked courses may challenge conventional ideas on the assessment
of course content. This paper describes a variety of innovative
assessment strategies which have been implemented on four networked
courses at the UK Open University, together with the evaluation work
which has been undertaken on these courses.

Collaborative Knowledge Building in Web-based Learning: Assessing the
Quality of Dialogue

Elsebeth Korsgaard Sorensen, Aalborg University, Denmark; Eugene Takle, Iowa State University, USA

This paper addresses the question of how to qualify a knowledge
building dialogue in web-based collaborative learning. It
investigates the idea of qualifying the dialogue through grading
requirements and through providing students with meta-awareness
around their dialogue. We investigate and analyze the changes in
quality of student interaction in three different deliveries of the
course that emerge in response to three different types of
instruction on expected behavior. From this we draw preliminary
conclusions on the extent to which descriptions of expected behavior
influence the interactive process and the quality of the interaction

Hello Daf and everyone,

Thank you very much for the two reading suggestions, Daf. I have got the links to the full texts for you (see below).

>Meeting the assessment demands of networked courses

One of the UKOU networked courses described in this article is H802. I actually did this course myself in 1999. It had a constructivist and collaborative approach. The article is interesting for those among us who
are looking for types of assessment relevant to such an approach. I would gladly talk about this with any of you. Here's the link to the full text:
 http://www.aace.org/dl/files/IJEL/IJEL119.pdf

>Collaborative Knowledge Building in Web-based Learning: Assessing the Quality of Dialogue

I have not read this second article Daf has pointed out but I will now.

Hope this is useful.

Hi all,

I don't know if you already now it. It was sent to me the first time a few months ago and I think it is really good.

http://www.shareeducation.com.ar/

By the way, I have have suggested to Dafne the idea to make a list, each of us, of the on-line publications to which we have access from our Universities. I don't know you, but when I really need to read an article and I cannot read it it becomes a little bit frustrating.

We could open a folder an write there all the information we have in doc. files.

I think that is also sharing and e-quality ;)

María

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Thanks a lot Arnold for the links, I have been skimming the second one. And as soon as I read the first one, I will post some comments about it.
I will post the links to the sharing references folder we will open to Maria's great suggestion, in the Links section of our Yahoo Group.
Hugs,
Daf

Arnold and Maria--
Your good references inspired me to explore Sternberg's idea of "developing expertise."  Here are
a couple of articles about this in the area of e-learning and metacognition:

Sherry, L. and Jesse, DD. The relationship between instructional technology and student achievement: A new Model.  RMC Research Corp, Denver, CO.
http://carbon.cudenver.edu/~lsherry/pubs/aera2.htm

Further description of the project:
http://www.thejournal.com/magazine/vault/A3297.cfm

BTW, I get the paper version of T.H.E. Journal also, and it is a good resource to have--it is free to
educators, resource people, etc., in the USA, but you can always read the articles (usually fairly short)
online.

Elizabeth, Arnold and Maria

I found this extremely long list of useful papers about ONLINE COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

IN HIGHER EDUCATION
(linked from Lorraine Sherry¹s  homepage)

With this, you will never get to the end :-)

And with these words, I¹ll get some well deserved sleep.

Hi everyone,

I'm sharing this news with many list serves; I apologize to those who receive this message more than
once.

I think I have just discovered the "mother of all online resources"!  This website, out of Canada, works
best with Internet Explorer; the main entry page doesn't read correctly when viewed with Netscape.
Follow the this link to the web database, and you will find an incredible resource that functions in both
browsers.
 http://alphaplus.ca/opnhs/english/subjAuth.asp

"The AlphaPlus Index to Web Resources" claims to have over 800 helpful websites. Click on 'E' for
ESL-related links; some are well-known, but several were new to me.  Additionally, this is not a database
limited to language learning; subjects range from 'Aboriginal Culture' and 'Addictions', to 'Writing
Instruction' (nothing under 'Z' yet).

The web resource index is all on one page, so you can either scroll down the page to review topics, or click the alpha letters and leap to the target letter.  Each topic is identified with a number, indicating the
amount of links currently available for any given subject.  (ESL has 220, English in the Work Place has
4).

AlphaPlus has many other resources related to literacy and more, available from their entry page
 http://alphaplus.windnetcs.com/alphacom.html

However, don't rely on the search engine, I found it to be "buggy" and inaccurate.  Additionally, AlphaPlus
offers some services that required registration and password access.  But, for the moment, the web links
are free to all  and definitely worth a 'look-see'.

Best regards,
Arlyn Freed

Hi all,
I don't know If you have all ready this... http://www.freeonlinesurveys.com/

Another thing for you on e-portolio, which... by the way? What's exactly that?:

Kind regards,

Dear all,
We are publishing an international online e journal in the field of educational technology in Turkey. It can be accessible at
http://www.tojet.sakarya.edu.tr/
As part of the journal, we incorporate free online ebooks. The first one is on Distance Education. If you consider a possible publication place, please consider. This is about sharing your writings. If you have written any books to be shared in an e book format, or if you would consider writing one, it can be accommodated.

While browsing for the articles on quality in online education, I came across the following article from another online journal Toward An Efeective Quality Assurance of Web-Based Leraning: The perspective of Distance Learning Students
at:  http://tojde.anadolu.edu.tr/   by Davey YEUNG, if you are interested in.

Arif

At my university, they have not yet more that a few online publications that I am interested in. And I still have to go there in person, while I usually study and surf online from home so this idea of sharing would help a lot.
Apart from that, I do have lots of references to online material to share.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::.

Dear friends:

There have been several very interesting suggestions for readings on e-learning this week and I would like to add the page on Online Learning Environments that I started two months ago at

http://www.malhatlantica.pt/teresadeca/webheads/online-learning-environments.htm

I'd like to call your special attention to the links with 'new'.

Hope you find it useful,  Teresa

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Dear all, I was recently exploring some cool web tools/ sites which I would like to share with you, these sites are:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1- The first is http://there.com: a "new revolutionary and massive online virtual world where you can fo pretty much anything you want" - as stated in the Internet Magazine last issue. It is still a beta site, so it is opened virtually its services between (5 p.m. - 11 p.m. PST Wed-Suns) but its forum is open 24 hours. It could be a strong tool or replacment for the palace.com or many different synchronous tools. One morething, is that it is not supporting Mac users untill now.

----------------------------------------
2- Dr. Watson Validitation tool http://watson.addy.com/: an amazing web based tool for checking the validity of your web site or one of its links. It is a free service to analyze your web page on the Internet. You give it the URL of your page and Watson will get a copy of it directly from the web server. Watson can also check out many other aspects of your site, including link validity, download speed, search engine compatibility, and link popularity. You should all try it on your own sites.

---------------------------------------- 3- For adding a web forum to your web site, try one of these sites, but I didn't personally try them yet..

http://webwizguide.com
http://awsd.com/scripts/webbbs/index.htm
http://phpbb.com
----------------------------------------
4- Finally, some web development tools that you can download from this web site: http://www.coffeecup.com/software/

Hope you find them useful,
Ismail.
