In Action with Students

This is the process by which, in WIA, we help each other to make a collaborative web-based activity come true in less than a week time, well mostly in a day.

“What’s in a name?”

:::::::::::::::::::::

After the session...

This is in relation to Scott's posting on the transformation of f2f to online form of instruction.  Arif  mentioned in his last posting, and I quote here, "I have mostly used the online activities as supplementary to my courses and asked my students experience online coursewares, e-portfolios, etc." In the same spectrum, I also use CMC to augment my classroom activities while at the same time providing students the opportunity to interact and participate in an authentic form of discussion with people (in my case, usually, webheads teachers) who are competent speakers of English (regardless of ethnicity). The idea is to have the students speak out their thoughts and opinions about a particular topic. Discussions in the classroom will then follow (the next day) with chat logs and experiences in hand. So, this is what I have in mind.

I intend to bring 6 groups of students in Tappedin this Sunday, February 23, 12:00 noon GMT (that's 9:00 pm Japan, 10:00 pm Australia, etc)

Students: 4th year University Level, majoring in Applied Foreign Languages

Course: Advanced Communication Skills

Topic of Discussion: What's in a name?

Synopsis:

To have a better understanding why and how Chinese names come about. Names given to most Chinese people have meanings and many were based on fortune tellings and superstitions. But the most significant influence in this aspect is the number of strokes a single character has. For instance, a character that looks or sounds like "Si" with a strong downward tone is considered taboo because the word means 'death'. It's considered an omen and therefore, brings in badluck. This topic is interesting because you will find out the trouble a parent has to go through just to give his/her child a name, a name that would ensure happiness and prosperity.

Invitation

So, I invite new and the savvy webheads to join my students this Sunday. Each group will have about 8-10 students. 1-2 webheads per group.

Where

TappedIn. This is where you will be tested :-) I have an office in TI- AidenY's office at East 802. You could use my office or you could also set up your own office in TI, simply page in BJ Berquist, TI's helpdesk 'wonder' woman, hey, she's a super-dooper webhead, too. Or go to http://www.tappedin.org for details.

What's in it for you?

You have wondered how some webheads teachers like myself have integrated CMC into the classroom, well this is your chance to do the same. But, before embarking on this online journey with your own students, you need practice, you've got to test the water and see and experience for yourself what's it like, how's it like. Besides, you get to open your own office in TI, for free. How cool can that be? Bar none.

What's in it for students?

They get the chance to talk and be heard by intelligent folks like the webheads. They'll be there to learn, and to have fun. They have done this several times last semester, so they're familiar with TI's interface.

What's in it for me?

Definitely 'no denero' (not even a dime in raise) but simply doing my job as a teacher.

Note:

Similar topic has been used and posted in efiwebheads by my students from NKFUST, this time, the students from Shih Chien University will be doing this activity.

If you're interested in participating, please let me know so I could assign groups.

Many thanks and I loof forward to hearing from you. Click on the url to see some of the students you will be meeting this Sunday

Hope to see you there.

You can count on me! This is going to be fun. As much fun as the I had with them about food. Maybe I'll finally understand the names of two very nice Chinese students I have this year!

Teresa

:::::::::::::::::::

    I will be there, Aiden!
I think my Nook at TI could accomodate one your groups ;-) I will just move plants and books to the corners, and send the pets with their friends for the week end.
I will also hide the caipirinha bottles in one of the file's drawers.
Btw, I love the topic your students will be discussing about. I will be an authentic audience with relevant questions whose answers I do not know beforehand!!!
Hugs,
Daf

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

     My student, Mike, has found this wonderful page about the Chinese language. You may want to take a look at it before Sunday. My students are preparing for this meeting and I think, teachers should, too.
I've got Daf and Tere, Daf could meet Group 1 in her office (Dafne's Nook) and Group 2 with Tere (Tere, what's the name of your office?)
Now, I need 4 more or more. Any takers?

Dear all:

The following link is a website for Chinese Character that may be
helpful for the assignment of "What's in a name?"

Aiden,

My office is S3110, but they can just keyboard /join TeresaAlm.

See you,  Teresa

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Aiden,

Sounds like fun but could you remind me again what time on Sunday it is scheduled for?

BTW, would you like us to stick closely to the topic of Chinese names or would it be suitable to expand out into the importance of names in general (for example research showing that teachers respond more positively to students with certain names) or that certain names carry with them stereotypes (John is perceived as "strong and reliable but can be a little slow", Eric is "handsom but somewhat

conceited") or naming traditions in other cultures? Or even why Chinese students often adopt Western names when other students around the world do not.

  Don,

that would be at 12 noon GMT, 8:00 pm taiwan, 9:00 for you in Japan. Meeting should last about an hour or so. I like your suggestions, Don. Actually, you could post these questions to them and could even mention anything that you think would be interesting for them to learn/know. The discussion should be as natural as possible.
Thanks Don for your interest.
Aiden

Hi Aiden, I have been talking to Daf, and she has convienced me about taking one of your group. I have just opened an an office at tappedin, so that the meeting could be there. MariaJo Office
Is that ok?
Regards,
María

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Great, Maria! Then you could take Group 1 from Class B. Some of them are in this photo,
http://www.geocities.com/aidenyeh/shih_chien/sy2002_1stsem/communication_skills_course.htm

This is getting exciting!
Two more! Don?
Like what i've said, at least 1 to 2 webheads in a group. the invitation is open to those who could make it.
Aiden

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Hi there,
Sharing with Aiden's students from Taiwan is a great opportunity to get started in online moderation. I am happy that Maria took up the challenge, as I told her, the only way to learn is by trying, there is always a first time. If you do not feel confident enough to take a group by yourself, join any of us and let's do it together!

Daf

     Hi Aiden,
I can make it this Sunday at 12.00 GMT for an hour or so. You count on me for taking care of a group, or teaming up with one of the veterans.
http://www.behindthename.com/ tells me that my name is 'eagle power'. I may not be able to exercise my muscles enough this week to be worthy of it by Sunday. But then - what's in a name?

Arnold

::::::::::::::::::::::

Arnold (er, Eagle power),
Thanks for joining in. You will be with Group 2 from Class B. Let me know where you would want to meet- you could borrow someone's office or would you like to set up your own?
Aiden
p.s.
You won't be needing those muscles for the chat ;-) But, I know how you dread typing at the speed of light, and this Sunday you would have to do just that, need to flex those fingers, eh.

  ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  Here's my office, Aiden, in case you want to let your students know in advance, for organization purposes:

3rd floor, 311 West Wing
It will be an interesting experience!

Rita
Count on me, Aiden, see you on Sunday.

:::::::::::::::::::::::

Aiden,

One more question is where? I don't have an "office"; at tappedin and don't really know how to get one. I suppose I could ask BJ about it. Could I just be borrowing someone else's space instead?

::::::::::::::::::::::::

You could use my office, then AidenY's Office. Here's how to get there:
1.You could take the elevator, click on 8th Floor
2. Once on 8th floor, go to East wing, E802- that's where my office is.
The simplest way is type. /join AidenY, I'll wait for you there.
Aiden
Don, you could always set up your TI office anytime you feel like it. Some good spots/rooms have already been taken, but there are plenty more (I think) to choose from. A piece of advice (based on Chinese superstition) choose a good number.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

    Aiden,
To answer my own question, I now have an office at TI:br>
19th floor, West Wing, 1906
You can send students there or I can meet them in the reception more confusing).

--Don

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::

     I'm forwarding this message to my students.

Thanks again
Aiden
Wasn't that quick!

http://www.geocities.com/aidenyeh/shih_chien/2ndsem/whatsinaname/main.htm

NOTE:

Please save the chat logs and I would really appreciate it if you could forward them to me after the sessions this Sunday so this project could be well-documented.

You can of course use voice in YM, and view webcams but I suggest that you do this after you have discussed the topic (What's in a name?)

A group of 8-9 students is still considered a small herd, but discussions could also go awry when not properly moderated. But, you're all webheads, savvy in multi-tasking and quite good chaos navigators ;-) what else could go wrong?

See you all this Sunday.

Buth,

That would be great! But, I think you've got to ask Daf, too.
I'll "see" you tonight (er, whatever time that would be for you

Hi everyone,

I understand there is going to be a discussion at http://www.tappedin.org at noon Sunday today Feb 23 with Aiden's students about names.  This subject came up before at Webheads, and some of these students wrote about their names.  If you are planning to attend this discussion you might want to review the following pages:

:::::::::::::::::::::::: After the session.....

Hi, Aiden, and all,

I had a fabulous experience today with your students, all ready to participate actively and in an orderly way, and willing to do their best to make sure I understood the real meaning behind a name, and the reasons for its choice.
To break the ice, I wanted to know how they felt about their own names, which prompted personal explanation and differences, as to that between boys' and girls' names. It was a true interchange of ideas, since I was, sorry to say, almost ignorant of the importance of choosing a name and of the reasons underlying this importance, as well as of the significance this choice has, and the weight on the baby's life when the name is given. I had already been to the site Aiden had sent us to, but I preferred to pretend I knew nothing, and , in fact, it paid.
They produced lots of examples to prove the reasons for parents' concern in choosing a name and, as I showed true enthusiasm to learn, all the students were eager to help me, and to tell their own stories. I was happy to see they were interested in my knowing about the meaning of my name, and they even found me a Chinese name, based on words I had chosen...

Despite errors, communication was successfully achieved. Students helped each other when needed, and they were highly motivated, as they practised the language using different functions. As an experienced EFL teacher, I can personally add I've had many f2f conversation classes which proved less natural and more straining, and which did not obviously provide further possibilities for exploitation. This is an instance which definitely confirms the value of CHAT for language learning if properly directed, prepared and evaluated. Of course the addition of audio will complete the whole process.

Now, Aiden, some questions, if possible: Did you have a preparation phase? Was this group's first experience? Will you assign a task on the chatlogs?  (Sorry if I have missed previous messages with the answers) What was their own feeling about the experience?
And what about other meetings?

Look forward to reading more.
A thankful hug,

Rita

::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Aiden's thanks.
